Paul, I’m glad that you’ve addressed such a topic. I also appreciate how you point out the hype. So many people want to promote doing all of this stuff, as if have the maximum internet presence will generate this golden egg of bookings. While I believe it is all good, I think it is important to realize that it only is one small part of what will generate leads and bookings.
I have a good, strong internet presence in the region of the USA where I perform. However, I find it only generates a small amount of bookings for me compared to other methods. It is easy to justify spending countless hours on doing everything necessary to have the optimum website, social media accounts, etc., in hopes that it will bring in tons of gigs. In my experience that is just not the case. Getting out there in public, meeting people and working with them, and things like direct mail and other more personal correspondence goes much further, but is a much slower and more deliberate way to build a business.
Good website SEO, social media posts, blog posts, referral/lead websites, Google Adwords, etc., are all well and good, but if people are expecting to get huge amounts of gigs from it all I believe they are kidding themselves. And I don’t want to ever be the one to contribute to that hype.
There is SO MUCH hype in the marketing and (auto-money making) sectors.
I think that it is important to have an internet presence, but over the years, it is just not a model that I see as profitable as connecting with people in a meaningful way. This could be in person, on the phone or even a good thread of emails with personality.
People are hit with choice paralysis when they do internet searches, which can mean they just give up and ask for recommendations from their friends. This is a response I have heard many times when I ask people how they came to booking me.
I wasted a lot of time on internet marketing and I can only hope that the lessons I learned can be passed on via this podcast and people at least think twice before giving up their valuable time for mediocre results. If they would just learn correct cold calling skills…sadly, people are scared to talk to stranger on a phone.
